What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation is a condition in which the skin turns darker in colour. It is not a serious condition but it can make the affected person frustrated and worried. It can occur in people of all races but the more darker skin types are more prone. There are many causes of pigmentation the commonest being sun damage and the effects of hormones for example during pregnancy and use of the contraceptive pill. At The CosmeticsGPs clinic you will receive a full assessment of your condition and offered proven treatment options. Melasma treatment should ideally take place during autumn, winter or spring periods. Treatment could be done in summer but the client will need full sun protection and avoidance.

What treatments are available?

Depending on the cause and the depth of the pigmentation Dr Ameh will prescribe one of a variety of solutions and sometimes a combination of treatments.

You will have a detailed consultation and will usually need a prepeel conditioning period of 2-3 weeks before peelings, during which “melanocyte sedation treatment” is used.

For the best results a course of daily skin care creams will be recommended alongside the peel schedule

Cosmelan

Cosmelan depigmentation treatment is an effective way of improving the appearance of dark hyperpigmentation patches and brown skin blemishes. It has a very high margin of safety.

The main action of cosmelan is the reduction and blending of melanin patches on the face (melasma and chloasma).

Cosmelan depigmentation involves a very versatile, dynamic process which is easily adapted to the needs of each individual patient.

Cosmelan reduces and eliminates acquired skin blemishes of melanic origin, increasing skin luminosity and equalising skin tone.

Cosmelan is suitable for most skin types and for men and women.

Dermamelan

Dermamelan works in a similar way to Cosmelan, however it is generally a deeper treatment, used for more severe pigmentation.
Dermamelan reduces and eliminates acquired skin blemishes of melanic origin, increasing skin luminosity and equalising skin tone. This treatment is dramatically effective and involves very little down time. It is a rapid medical depigmentation treatment that is effective in all types of pigmentation problems, even in resistant cases that have failed all other types of treatment.
It can be applied in any season and is compatible with all types and shades of skin. It permits some sun exposure without the risk of recurrence. It is completely safe and the pigmented patches will usually disappear in a short period of time.
There are minimal side effects (only slight redness and flaking) and there is a regularisation of sebaceous secretion resulting in reduction of any excessive oiliness and improvement of any acne problems. The skin becomes bright, rejuvenated and free from abnormal pigmentation, with results starting to show in just 10 to 14 days.
From the first day after treatment, make-up can be worn, if required, without any problems. Suitable for all skin types this Dermamelan (Amelan) treatment can help reduce pigmentation marks by up to 95%.

Microneedling

Microneedling can be used to treat skin pigmentation. It is an advanced procedure and should only be used by a medical professional as in the wrong hands it may actually cause further pigmentation.
Dr Ameh is fully trained in this procedure and will offer the latest advice and guidance as well as recommending home care treatments to use alongside this procedure
Please see the microneedling page for more information
